The Confucius Institute at Denver Community College held its 3rd Colorado Chinese Speech Contest for Primary, Secondary and University Students on April 17th.
114 students took part in the contest and were divided into 5 teams: preschool team, primary-secondary team, senior high team, university team and Overseas Chinese student team. According to numbers dictated by the contest; the primary-secondary team was once again divided into 6 groups while the senior high team was divided into 2 groups. 15 specially-appointed Chinese teachers and experienced Chinese teachers from primary and secondary schools served as judges. Over 300 teachers, students and parents watched the contest.
The contest received spirited support from communities in Denver, especially Denver Language School, Denver Montclair International School, Blue Bridge International and Geo-Tech sponsored the contest through different means; either offering funds discounts or other methods of sponsorship.
The majority of contestants spoke clear and fluent Chinese. During the interval, the organizers arranged for students to stage performance such as songs and dances, Chinese calligraphy and paintings for audience. The outcome of the competitition was that 35 students won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, while the runners up won consolation prizes. Prizes including T-shirts, Peking opera masks and bookmarkers were donated by Hanban.
